modem help needed
« on: December 25, 2003, 12:48:58 am »
maybe one of you can help! i redid windows xp on this system last week (formatted)and had trouble with being able to connect to the internet. in this area where i am at the only way to conect is by modem. i knew how to set up my isp and was not worried about that until i went to get online and nothiing would work, the easiest fix was to take my computer to the isp, they build a lot of computers for people around here and there are no computer shops in this area altho i was aware that they did not like linking with two modems on one conection, which i have been doing for years and works well for downloading, uploading, and getting pics, i conected at  96.00 to 98.60 compared with the now 57.6 kbs, the gentlemen  at there shop messed with several things and u see what i have now. is  there anyone out there that can tell me what he did  to not let me conect any faster?

please help!

There are two ways he could have messed with you.  One is that he has "separated" the modems so that they do not shotgun, or he may have put a limit on your account so that you can only maintain one connection at a time.  Do this:

Click Start
Click Run
type cmd and hit enter
at the prompt, type ipconfig and hit enter

Tell me what you see there and I may be able to help you see what's going on.  I won't be back online til Sunday night, tho, so if I'm not answering please have patience! ;)

Alright, what that tells me is that you only have one connection to the ISP.  Chances are, he disabled shotgunning ot get one of the modems to work.

Thanks Mesphisto_kur I took what you said to thought and desided to disconect the modems, uninstall them restart Windows, then shut down windows, reinstall the modems and let windows reinstall them. Once I did this I seem to be connecting a whole lot faster again.

Thank you

my screen now says

PPP adapter wtrt.net:

Connection_specific DNS Sufix  . :
IP Address.....................................:208.246.8.20
Subnet Mask..................................:255.255.255.255
Default Gateway.............................:208.246.8.20

Thank You once again .

What's funny is it still looks like only one connection.  Maybe that is how Windows XP using Shotgun.  Back in the old days (god, almost a decade now) when I first played with Shotgun, it showed as two connections.  So I steared you the right way with the wrong advice... <shrug>  Hey, it works, what can I say.  I'm a genius!  ;)
